- Restart the Windows Installer service manually from the Windows search menu > Services.
- Rename the msiexec file in the system directory to msiexec.old, and restart Windows Installer.
Common Fixes
- Restart your PC : Press the Windows + X shortcut to open the Power User Menu, select Shut down or sign out, and click on Restart.
- Open the installer file as an administrator : Right-click the program installer file and select Run as administrator to launch it with elevated permissions.
- Remove the old program version before installing : It will prevent conflicts between different app versions. Head to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, and uninstall the program before installing its new version.
Fix 1: Restart the Windows Installer Service
If the Windows Installer service glitches and stops working on your Windows PC, you will have trouble installing any program. To fix it, restart the service manually.

Step 3: Double-click the created registry file (ResetWI.reg) and select Yes when prompted to modify the Windows registry.
Fix 3: Rename the msiexec File
msiexec, a core component of Windows Installer, controls the reading and installation of a file package. If a duplicate msiexec file exists on your system, it can prevent the Windows Installer from launching. Here’s how you can fix it:
Step 1: Press the Windows + E shortcut to open File Explorer, copy-paste the below path in the address bar, and press Enter .
C:\Windows\System32
Step 2: Locate the msiexec file in the list, press the F2 key , and rename it to msiexec.old .
Step 3: Finally, restart the Windows Installer service as demonstrated in Fix 1 above.
Fix 4: Re-Register the Windows Installer
If you are facing installation issues even after modifying the registry, you must re-register the Windows Installer using the Command Prompt.
Step 1: Press the Windows key , search Command Prompt , and click on Run as administrator .
Step 2: Approve the UAC prompt and copy-paste the following commands to execute them sequentially. Then, restart your PC.

Fix 5: Repair Corrupt System Files to Fix the Windows Installer Service
Lastly, corrupt system files can prevent the Windows Installer from functioning properly. Repair it by running the SFC and DISM scans to restore the Windows image .
Step 1: Open the Command Prompt with administrative permissions.
Step 2: Type sfc /scannow and press Enter .
