• Enable Mobile Data access for the Facebook Messenger app on your iPhone or Android.
  • If you want to use Data Saver on your Android phone, we suggest disabling it specifically for Facebook Messenger. Similarly, you should enable background app refresh if you have an iPhone.
  • Reset network settings to restore the wireless network settings of your iPhone and Android to the default state and remove every detail you’ve added about your Wi-Fi network.

Basic Fixes

  • Disable data saver: Depending on your device software, check and then disable data saver option.
  • Force quit and relaunch the Messenger app: This will give the app a fresh start on your iPhone or Android.
  • Update the app: Install the latest version of the app in order to get rid of bugs or glitches.

Fix 1: Enable Mobile Data Access

If you use Facebook Messenger mostly on Wi-Fi, the app may not have access to Mobile Data – only natural to do that if you don’t want to spend your mobile data credits. That’s probably why Messenger won’t work on mobile data. You can check and enable the same on your iPhone or Android phone. Here’s how.

On iPhone

Open Settings > Messenger > Enable Mobile Data .

On Android

Open Messenger App Info > Mobile data and Wi-Fi > Background Data .

Fix 2: Enable Unrestricted Data Usage/Background App Refresh

If you want to use Data Saver on your Android phone, we suggest disabling it specifically for Facebook Messenger. Similarly, you should enable background app refresh if you have an iPhone.

On Android

Open Messenger App Info > Mobile data and Wi-Fi > Unrestricted data usage .

On iPhone

Open Settings > Messenger > Enable Background App Refresh .

Fix 3: Reset Network Settings

If none of the solutions work, the last resort is to reset the network settings on your iPhone and Android. That restores the wireless network settings of your iPhone and Android to the default state and remove every detail you’ve added about your Wi-Fi network. This is an advanced solution and only follow it if none of the methods mentioned above work.

Tip: You can also try to login again to your Facebook account in Messenger as a troubleshooting method. But in case you can’t log in again, refer to our post that lists the best ways to fix this issue .
